『The Pale Blue Dot』は、最も遠く離れた地点から地球を撮影した、最遠の地球の写真です。
今回の記事では、 その写真を見てカールセーガンが語った言葉を和訳し、ご紹介してさせていただきます。

本当にちっぽけな存在の私たち人類が、長いようで短い人生の中で作り上げてきた歴史をこの写真から感じられるでしょうか？

カール・セーガンって誰？
カール・エドワード・セーガン（Carl Edward Sagan)は、アメリカの天文学者、SF作家でした。
彼は、宇宙有人飛行の批判者として知られ、母国の行ったアポロ計画をボロクソに批判し以下のように言ったとのこと。「莫大な予算を注ぎ込んで得られた人類の恩恵はヒートテックとテフロン加工のフライパンだけ」
なかなかの批判っぷりですね。。。
文才や話術も優れており、雑誌の編集長についたり、難しい解説を身近な例え話で説明し、大衆に受け入れられていたそうです。

From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of particular interest. この距離から見る地球には、特に興味をそそられないかもしれない。 But for us, it’s different. Consider again that dot. しかし、私たちの視点では違ってみて取れる。もう一度この「点」について考えてみてほしい。 That’s here. That’s home. Settle, not yet. 行き着くことはできるが、定住はまだできない。 Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. 否が応でも、しばらくは地球にいる他ないのである。 It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character building experience. 天文学という学問は、謙虚に人格を形成していく教えだと言われてきた。 There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. おそらく、遠く離れた小さな故郷を見せつける以上に、人類の愚かさを実感させてくれるものはないだろう。 “To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known”. 私にはこの点が、より親切に互いを思いやり、色褪せた青い点を守り、大事にすべきだと。そう強調しているように思えてならない。それがたった一つ、我々の知る、故郷なのだから。
